Sports Massage

What is sports massage?

Sports Massage is the term applied to the use of massage for the specific benefit of participating in sports or exercise. It covers the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of the soft tissues of the body eg muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Massage Room

Sports massage should be tailored to each individual's needs to positively enhance ones ability to perform. Sports massage is also recognized as being one of the most effective treatment for an injury.

Benefits of sports massage

There are numerous benefits attached to a Sports / Deep Tissue Massage:

  • Improves lymph and blood circulation thereby improving bone nutrition and repairs
  • Aids joint mobility
  • Helps posture
  • Mechanically stretches muscles, tendons and ligaments which can not be achieved through active stretching alone
  • Encourages better flexibility
  • Discourages the formation of scar tissue
  • Encourages relaxation allowing the body to function more efficiently
  • Helps remove metabolic waste from the body
  • Increases muscle tone

Sports massage can be beneficial at various stages of participation. For example:

  • The conditioning/training phase
  • Pre competition
  • Inter competition
  • Post competition
  • Post travel
  • Injury prevention
  • Injury recovery

Regardless of whether you exercise or play sport to keep fit, or compete from club to international level, then sports massage may be of benefit to you.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage is a technique of massage that focuses on the deeper layer of muscle tissue in your body. It aims to release the chronic patterns of physical and emotional tension that may have been stored for many years and restore correct structural alignment and balance. Deep tissue tension inhibits your postural ease and movement and may be the result of injury, continued bad-posture, or stress.

This therapy can be used for a full body session, or for muscle-specific work.

When muscles are stressed, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue. A Deep Tissue Massage will help to loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from the muscles, and get blood and oxygen circulating. A Deep Tissue Massage helps to break up scar tissue, adhesions and loosens connective tissue.

During a Deep Tissue Massage it is not uncommon to experience a mild and transitory discomfort as the deeper layers of tissue are worked and your long stored tension is released. There may also be a slight soreness, like after a good exercise workout, which is normal. Soon after though, when better than ever.

The aim of each treatment is to:

  • Reduce pain to the injured area
  • Reduce swelling to the injured area
  • Restore range of movement of joints and soft tissue (muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves)
  • Rehabilitate to full function
  • Promote a feaster recovery from training and injury

Preventative Massage

Anybody competing in top-level sport constantly puts his or her body under stress, both in training to achieve peak performance and during competition.

Preventative massage will:

  • Aid recovery between training sessions
  • Monitor the stresses which may be building up in the body, therefore warning against potential injury
